For love is as strong as death,
its jealousy unyielding as the grave.
It burns like blazing fire,
like a mighty flame.
Many waters cannot quench love;
rivers cannot wash it away.
If the love of God is a fire, we have often sequestered it to a safe and management space, like a fire pit. We’ve blocked it in and kept it somewhat buried. But the love of God, like the song writer tells us, is a blazing fire and a mighty flame. It isn’t a calm fire that is content to warm us when we are cold. It is an all consuming fire. When the love of God falls, it falls on everything, and things can get out of control.
We prayed today that we would be released to get messy in the love of God. That we’d be more loving towards all of God’s people, regardless of how we feel about them. We know that God is pure love towards all men and women. God, give us big hearts for your children.
We prayed that the fire of God’s love would not be contained in our Church alone but that it would spread throughout our city. I saw pockets of the city that, like kindling, are ready to be set on fire with God’s love. God send your fire of love to your children today.
We prayed that we would be multipliers of God’s love, that a great combustion of love would begin in our hearts and cause a dynamic growth of love far beyond our small spheres of influence.
We prayed that God’s love would surprise many during this Lenten fast. We know that fasting can cause an opening in the spirit by withholding something from the flesh. We asked that, even those who are fasting a small thing simply for traditions sake would find the love of God pouring through that little opening in their spirit.
