“Open up your heart oh God, We need a taste of your good love!” That was the cry this morning. Oh, would God’s infinite love pour down on us in torrents! Just like there was a natural flood that destroyed the world during Noah’s day, would there be a flood of God’s love today. We want to have hearts that lap like dogs from the river of God’s love like the chosen men in Gideon’s army (Judges 7:7).
I was specifically impacted by Paul’s statement in Ephesians 5:31-32:
"Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.
What does Paul mean that this “refers to Christ and the Church”? Then it hits me. Christ left God the Father to bring mankind back into a direct relationship with the Holy Trinity. You could read the verse “Therefore Christ left his father and mother to hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” Doesn’t Paul talk in Ephesians about being united in Christ? And in Romans doesn’t he tell us that we are united in Christ’s death through baptism?
Paul was right, this mystery is profound. But at the very least this passage is communicating the passion with which Christ seeks after us. He is like a man who is seeking his bride. He also desires to be united with us. There is a burning passion in the heart of God to dwell with you and me. He desires to love us. His heart yearns for us. We may not be able to understand the mystery of our union with Christ in this Love. But, thank God we don’t have to understand it to experience it.
I believe the love of God will be victorious in His pursuit for me!
